Online Class

Tuesday Aug 2

Just a reminder that there is no online class tomorrow. Please use the time to work on your paper. Make sure to email it to me by Tuesday at midnight.
As we discussed in class, I will be looking for a thesis and claims that aim to prove the thesis. There should be quotations from the readings  that will be used as evidence, and analysis that shows the reader how the evidence proves the thesis or claim. There should be no use of second person references (you). A format that I like to see is:

CL - Claim
I - Introduce the source
QU - Quote or paraphrase the evidence
E - Explain how the evidence prove the claim
S - So what how does this all prove your thesis.

The paper needs to be a solid 2 - 2 1/2 pages of good solid writing. Try to make sure that the quotes you use really prove what you are trying to convey.

Here is the sample that I passed out last week. I have indicated the claim, evidence, analysis structure for you to see.

Here too is the spread sheet with grades so far organized by student id number. Remember a 1 is meeting expectations.

Please begin by watching the video below. As I said in class, the video should appeal to the procrastinator and the non-procrastinator. After watching, please comment about the type of procrastinator you are and how it effects your life particularly with school. What are some techniques that you have used before to help combat procrastinating? Have you heard of any that you would like to try?

I am a planner by nature. I don't procrastinate especially when there are deadlines as Urban discusses. But, I am to some extent the type of person who procrastinates when there aren't deadlines, and I am not good at having balance between work and family life. I tend to procrastinate on spending time with my mom and nurturing my hobbies. After I watched this video I realized that I needed to to a better job of having balance in my life or I would regret some of my choices.  I now leave work early several days a week and go have coffee and knit. I have worked really hard the last six months to make plans and spend more time with my mom. I don't have specific techniques except remembering that these things are as important to me as my job - maybe even more so.  I'm not perfect, but I am better than before. I - like all people - am a work in progress.

Please begin by watching the video below. Corey Rich is an adventure photographer. In the video he discusses the many times he has had to persevere through discomfort in order to 'get the perfect shot' This idea can be applied to your college experience - to any experience really. Frederick Douglas once said, "There is no progress without struggle" I would like for you to think about obstacles you have overcome in order to be attending college this fall.
When I think about some of the obstacles I overcame as a student in order to graduate I think about the year my dad died two weeks after the semester began and how hard it was to focus on my studies. I knew how important it was to my dad that I finish school though, so I did my best. My grades weren't the greatest; I was tired and grouchy for six months; BUT I finished the semester and the next one in order to graduate on time.
On a less serious note, I also think about times where I needed help with school. Like many, I hated the idea of seeking out tutoring. In one class in particular though, I really wanted to do well. After my first failed exam, I went to the tutoring center to arrange for a tutor. I was embarrassed because my tutor was a classmate of mine from other classes. It was awkward. But once again, I thought about how important it was for me to graduate. I swallowed my pride and met with my tutor every week. I ended up with a B+ in the class. I also learned that asking for help and swallowing my pride was easier than failing.

After watching the video, please write a short paragraph about an obstacle you have overcome to be where you are today. Also, think about a possible obstacle that may come up in the fall when school starts. These can be things like work/school schedule conflicts, car problems, etc. Please write a short paragraph about how you might handle this obstacle to stay focused on school.

Don't forget to flip-flop the readings for Thursday and Monday by reading "How to Achieve Goals" over the weekend" and saving "A Scaleable Goal Setting Intervention" for after Monday. Please also make sure to read "The Writing Assignments that Changes Lives" It is listed on the syllabus for tonight's reading. There should be a journal entry for both of these articles.
